apres+infinitive

apres+infinitive

In the quiz above, there was a question about the sentence:

Après manger, les filles feront leurs devoirs

I was slightly confused as I would have written this sentences as "apres avoir mange" (with appropriate accents) at the beginning and not apres manger. In this lesson it seems to imply that to write apres+infinitive is wrong: Après avoir fait = After doing in French (auxiliary avoir)

I think I may be missing something and would appreciate some help. Is manger being used as a noun here maybe?

No, "manger" is a verb here, and specifically it's the present infinitive. But it's also correct to use the past infinitive "après avoir mangé".

"Après manger" is a fixed expression which means the same as "après avoir mangé". "Après boire" also exists, but in general you can't use a present infinitive after "après".

I have an issue with the English translation. It's translated using the word "lunch", but there's no mention in the French of which meal is being eaten. I would assume le dîner, or at least un goûter, because I'm accustomed to homework being done at home after school. In short, I would translate it as simply "After eating", and not "After lunch".
