Distinction depends on context - is it non-specifically about (some) 'others' «d'autres», or specifically about 'the others', an identifiable group of others - «des autres» ?

I don't know the context, but here is an example:
J'ai vu d'autres randonneurs. -- I saw other hikers.J'ai vu les autres randonneurs. -- I saw the other hikers.
