Je suis chanteuse

Question

When I used "Je suis une chanteuse," instead of "je suis chanteuse," I was told I was incorrect.  But if the person speaking sings but singing isn't her profession, wouldn't "je suis une chanteuse" be correct?

Hi Jim, the link you provide doesn't seem to address the core of Bart's question.
Je suis chanteuse always means "I'm a (female) singer." And using une chanteuse makes it sound off, regardless of whether you are a professional singer or not. If you are an occasional or amateur singer, you could probably say je fais du chant. Note, however, that faire chanter qqn means "to blackmail someone".

Following on from Chris’s point, to describe oneself as an amateur singer one could say: ‘Je suis chanteuse amateur’ or probably also ‘Je chante / Je fais du chant en amateur’.
