Le nom des plants - who not les noms?

Why does she say le nom des plants, but not les noms as plural?

In French one always takes the viewpoint of the individual and not that of the group. Le nom de plants, has le nom (singular) because the individual plant only has one name even though the group of plants as a collective has many names.

Here's another such example:

Les bébés sucent leur pouce ("Babies suck their thumb") and NOT ...sucent leurs pouces.
