plus que or plus de

plus que or plus de

I'm confused when to use 'plus que' versus 'plus de'

From the text we see 'est plus que compensé par' and  then 'pendant plus de quelques secondes'.

How do you know which to use?

Bonjour Rory,

When making comparisons (the examples below only use 'more'), you can use:

- plus de + [sth] + que de [sth] / que [sb]more [sth] than [sth/sb]

J'ai plus d'amis que d'ennemis I have more friends than enemies

J'ai plus de temps que Marc = I have more time than Marc

plus de + [sth] more (of) [sth]

J'ai plus de temps I have more time

- plus + adjective + que ... = more + adjective + than...

Je suis plus drôle que mon frère = I am funnier than my brother

- plus que + adjective more than + adjective

c'est plus que suffisant = it is more than enough

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
