Why derniere, not passee?

Why derniere, not passee?

Can one not say "la semaine passee", to mean the same thing as "la semaine derniere"? (I can't find accents)

This question relates to:French lesson "Adjectives ending in -er become -ère in the feminine in French"

'La semaine passée' (meaning 'last week') is used mainly in Western Switzerland and can be heard in some areas of France whilst 'la semaine dernière' is more commonly used in France. It would depend on where you are at the time...
