Why is it necessary to leave a space between the final word in a sentence and an exclamation mark, in order to get a perfect mark score?

That’s the way it is in written French. There should always be a space before any punctuation mark made up of 2 parts (question mark, exclamation mark, colon, semi-colon), but not before a simple one-piece punctuation mark like a comma or a full-stop.
