avoir or être with Monter

Question

The quiz asks "Hier, tu ________ monté mes valises dans ma chambre." The correct answer is "as", but the lessons says to use être if there is a "dans". So why isn't it "tu es monté ... DANS ma chambre? Merci

I see what you mean Laura, it can be confusing.
The important bit is that in the case of monter les valises, the verb monter has an object ( les valises) so it will use avoir and not être.
Look at the difference between -

Tu es monté dans ma chambre ? = Did you go up to my room?
and 
Tu as monté mes chaussures dans ma chambre ? = Did you take my shoes up to my room?

It’s the position of the preposition in the sentence. Since the conjugated verb is followed by a noun avoir is the correct auxiliary verb to use. For me what works best to remember the rules is generally entre is used with an associated movement. I went in your room (je suis monté dans ta chambre) if I were to say I took the ironing to your room (j’ai monté le repassage dans ta chambre) as I’m referring to a noun a direct object avoir is the only auxiliary verb to use. I know this answer was a bit long but I hope this helps your understanding a bit better though.
